A Richmond Celebration of Women in Beer

Capital Ale House in Richmond, Virginia appreciates the importance of women in the beer industry. Since opening their doors over ten years ago, they’ve had women leading the way as beer buyers and general managers of their four locations. A weekend celebration of women in beer, nicknamed "Brewbies," formalizes this appreciation.
The celebration begins Friday, March 8, featuring Pretty in Pink, a beer brewed in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Though brewed by Lost Rhino Brewery in Ashburn, Virginia, the recipe is a collaboration of four women from four breweries: Hardywood Park, Bluejacket, Vintage 50, and Lost Rhino. Pretty in Pink is a Saison base using an Ardennes yeast with added flavor, aroma and hue from hibiscus and pomegranate. The beer is a pale pink, and the fruit flavor is equally pale—evident but not overpowering.
The Friday festivities feature the Pretty in Pink check presentation to the VCU Massey Cancer Center, a leading cancer research hospital in Richmond, as well as two female bands, the Lisa Lim Band and Jackie Scott and the Housewreckers.
Saturday’s Brewbies celebration highlights women in the brewing industry, with a panel discussion featuring Jennifer Yuengling of the Yuengling Brewery, Mary Wolf of Wild Wolf Brewing in Nellysford VA, Audra Gaiziunas of Mother Earth Brewing in Kinston, NC, Kristi Griner of Vintage 50 in Leesburg, VA, and Lee Johns of Apocalypse Ale Works. The event will be moderated by Annie Tobey, freelance writer covering beer, travel, and women’s special interests.
In addition to their wisdom and insights, the women will bring beer, including Mother Earth Endless River Kolsch and Sisters of the Moon IPA, Apocalypse Ale Works 6th Seal & Hoppocalypse Imperial Red, Wild Wolf Area 151 Blonde, Wild Wolf Alpha Pale, Lost Rhino Faceplant IPA, Pretty In Pink Saison, and Yuengling and Yuengling Bock.
Immediately after the discussion, Gina Dalmas & The Cow Tippin’ Cowboys will play.
The event also recognizes the Pink Boots Society, a professional organization for women in the beer industry.
